Ways To Tackle Windows 10 Num Lock Issues With Ease

Method 1: Enable / Disable Windows 10 Numlock On Startup

If you wish to enable Windows 10 Num Lock at the startup, you can accomplish this by making changes to the registry. Here are the steps to do that but before that here’s a small piece of advice –

Note: Please be very careful of the changes you make to the registries. So, it is always advisable to keep a registry backup handy. For this, when you open the Registry Editor, click on File and then Export and keep it saved at your desired location.

So, to enable or disable Windows 10 Num Lock key on startup, follow the steps mentioned below –

1. Open the registry by pressing the Windows + R key which will open the Run command
2. Type regedit and press enter
3. Follow the path HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Control Panel > Keyboard
4. On the right-hand screen, you will see InitialkeyboardIndicators. Its values define whether you want to disable or enable Windows 10 Num Lock at startup. Double click on this option and change the value to “0” to disable Windows 10 Num Lock on startup and “2” to enable Windows 10 Num Lock at startup
5. Expand the HKEY_USERS registry folder.

You will see a series of keys going from S-1- …which are user accounts on your PC. You will have to repeat the step above manually, double click on each of the keys, go to InitialkeyboardIndicators and change their value to “2.”

Method 2: Uncheck The Option “Control Your Mouse With A Keypad”

If you find that Num lock is not working in Windows 10, follow these steps and uncheck the “Control your mouse with a keypad” option:

1. Press Windows + I keys which will open the Settings
2. Scroll down to Ease of Access
3. Under Interaction click on Mouse
4. Check if the Control your mouse with a keypad button is switched off

Method 3: Disable Fast Startup

This is an easy little process that was introduced back in Windows 8. The feature is also known as a hybrid boot. It uses your computer’s hibernate or sleep mode so that your computer can boot faster. Disabling this feature can give you control of Num Lock. To disable fast startup, follow the steps mentioned below –

1. Press Windows + X key
2. Click on Power Options
3. Under Related Settings click on Additional Power Settings
4. On the left-hand side click on Choose what the power button does
5. Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable which you will find under Define power buttons and turn on password protection
6. Uncheck Turn on fast startup
7. Click on Save Changes

Method 4: Customize Num Lock In Your BIOS Settings

When you boot your computer, you will find a way to get into the BIOS settings right on the very first screen. Now, BIOS settings may be specific to your computer. Once, in the BIOS settings, you might find an option that lets you enable Num Lock at startup or boot. You can try enabling and disabling it. After your computer starts, check if your Num Lock is functional or not.
