The Internet of Things: Network of Physical Objects – Infographic

Last Monday in my Infographic, I discussed about the ‘Potential of Nano World’ and what you can expect in the future. This Monday I am here to discuss about the hottest topic of conversation both in the workplace and outside of it, “Internet of Things”. It’s a concept that not only has the potential to impact how we live but also how we work.

Go back to those old days when we used to watch those big CRT TVs which had the functional buttons below the screen. At that time, we wished that there should be an instrument to change the channels sitting at our own places. And then we were introduced to remotes. The next step for me would be a feature through which I no more need to change the channel. I would rather set the instructions about at which time I wish to see which channel and then my TV plays them automatically. In addition, a feature which would let me update these instructions whenever I have a change in my routine programs.

Guess what? That’s going to happen sooner than you think. You are guessing it right. We are going to get that as part of ‘Internet of Things’. But what exactly is the “Internet of things” and what impact is it going to have on you, if any? There are a lot of complexities around the “Internet of things” but I want to stick to the basics. Lots of technical and policy-related conversations are being made but many people are still just trying to grasp the foundation of what the heck these conversations are about.

Let’s start with understanding a few things.

Expect the Unexpected

None of the above challenges are a reason to oppose IoT. Nor is the list complete. Just as purposes for smart devices will be found that we cannot anticipate today, so challenges are likely to emerge that we cannot conceive today.

If we can extrapolate from the challenges we have seen in earlier revolutions, we can at least mitigate those created by the IoT. If we do, then, if nothing else, we can be better prepared to meet the challenges that we didn’t anticipate.
