Sci-Fi Movies You Shouldn’t Miss in 2017

The past year had been a ball when it comes to major sci-fi releases in Hollywood. We certainly are living in a great age of visually spectacular cinema and there’re plenty of highly anticipated sci-fi movies lined up for release this year. Although there’s still some time before these futuristic visions begin to boggle your minds, we’ve prepared a list so you won’t miss out on anything. Here are some of the biggest science fiction flicks that are awaiting release in 2017.

  1. Alien: Covenant

If you were confused whether the 2012 Prometheus was a part of the alien franchise or not, this movie would certainly answer several questions. Directed by the legendary Ridley Scott, Alien: Covenant picks off from where Prometheus left off as Michael Fassbender reprises his role from the 2012 movie and will serve as a prequel story to the 1979 Alien.

  1. Star Wars Episode VIII

We have recently seen the overwhelming response to the Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the spin-off Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This clearly states how big this franchise is despite the mediocre ‘Prequel-Trilogy’ in the early 2000s. Episode VIII will follow the events of the Force Awakens and will answer several questions from the previous movie. A must-watch for Star Wars fans and sci-fi lovers.

  1. Thor: Ragnarok

While the first Thor movie wasn’t that good, the Norse God of Thunder’s association with the ongoing Infinity Wars storyline has made this a must watch. Chances are, you’re already fired for this movie after seeing Thor consulting Dr. Strange regarding his father’s disappearance. There has been news about Bruce Banner (the Hulk) to make an appearance in Ragnarok, including rumors of a World War Hulk transformation that would set this movie apart from its prequels.

  1. The Dark Tower

If you’re bored how most sci-fi movies are either about superheroes or space travel, this one’s going to change everything. The Dark Tower is the highly awaited movie adaptation of Stephen King’s Sci-Fi, Dark Fantasy novel series of the same name. The movie was initially planned to star Russell Crowe as the protagonist gunslinger Roland Deschain when it was first announced in 2012. However, the role finally landed in the hands of Idris Erba, who also plays an important character in the abovementioned Thor instalment. The movie is said to be a sequel to the books and takes off exactly from where the last novel ended.

  1. Spider Man: Homecoming

You might argue that the Sam Raimi directed Spider-Man trilogy is the best on-screen adaptation of the character. But that certainly didn’t stop Sony Pictures to reboot the series in 2012 with the Amazing Spider Man followed by a sequel in 2014. Although the reboot wasn’t bad, they were labeled as a reboot fans never asked for, giving rise to another reboot. Finally, in the 2016 Captain America: Civil War, Marvel Studios again rebooted the character to a 15-year old version and tied it in with their Infinity Wars story line. Spider Man: Homecoming will star Tom Holland reprise his role of the web-slinging superhero, with Robert Downey Jr. playing Tony Stark/Iron Man and Michael Keaton playing the role of antagonist ‘The Vulture’.

  1. Justice League

Although a lot of fans were disappointed by the confusing Batman V Superman, the promise of seeing some of their favorite DC comic character in a live-action movie is certainly enticing. Justice League will follow the events of Dawn of Justice as Bruce Wayne/Batman recruits Wonder Woman, Aquaman and the Flash against an intergalactic invasion, after the apparent death of Superman. Fans have already shown a tremendous response to this movie even before the trailers first appeared, showing this to be one of the biggest releases this year.

  1. Guardians of Galaxy 2

The first Guardians of Galaxy surprised everyone, despite of its not-so-star-studded cast as compared to other Marvel Studio movies. Nevertheless, that surely didn’t stop this rag-tag group of space outlaws kick major ass at the box office. Audiences will certainly be excited to see Star Lord and his crew follow a new adventure, which is supposed to connect more closely with Infinity Wars.

  1. World War Z 2

When Sean of the Dead came out in 2004 (damn it’s been 13 years already! feel old yet?) it poked fun at almost every aspect of the Zombie Apocalypse film genre. But Hollywood’s love for the undead cannibals certainly seem not to end. The first World War Z movie differentiated itself from this genre by finally providing a viable solution to this pandemic virus. The sequel will again star actor Brad Pitt and the story is set after the events of the first movie.

  1. Ghost in the Shell

Based on the anime series of the same name, Ghost in the Shell will star actress Scarlett Johansson in the role of Major Kusanagi in a live-action adaption. The story is set in a futuristic world where most humans have augmented cyber bodies and extensive use of artificial intelligence. The protagonist is the head of a special police unit, that attempts to bring down cyber terrorists and cyber saboteurs. The series has also been hailed as a major inspiration of the Matrix trilogy and is highly anticipated by the fans.

  1. Logan

We certainly cannot imagine any other actor play the role of Wolverine, but Hugh Jackman. Unfortunately, the actor has indicated that this movie will be his farewell take on the mutant superhero and will bring an end to the chain of events started in 2009 Wolverine movie. The movie has been rated R due to its strong depiction of violence, as a justification to the titular character’s portrayal in comic books. The movie also stars Patrick Stewart who reprises his role as the older version of Professor X/Charles Xavier.

Honorable Mentions That Might Take Us by Surprise

  1. Transformers: The Last Knight
  2. War for the Planet of the Apes
  3. Power Rangers
  4. Despicable Me 3
  5. Annihilation

The year would definitely see some major blockbuster sci-fi releases outside of this list. However, this would totally help you get ready for your favorite movies. If you have anything to add to this list, please use the comments section below.
