1. Clear Browsing Cache and Cookies
Cache and cookies are stored whenever you visit webpages on the Internet. If accumulated for a long time, can make your browser slow. Therefore, you should clean cache and cookies more often. To clear cache and cookies, follow these steps –
- Open Internet Explorer, Click on Tools (Gear icon) on the top right hand corner.
- Click on Safety -> Delete browsing history. You will get a pop-up window.
- You can also get the pop-up window by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+DEL simultaneously.
- Select the type of files, you want to delete and click on Delete.

2. Uninstall Toolbars
While installing a software, or downloading a song, you might accidentally end up adding unwanted toolbars. To remove these toolbars, follow the steps.
- Open Internet Explorer, Click on Tools (Gear icon) on the top right-hand corner.
- Navigate to Manage Add-ons.
- Click on Toolbars and Extensions under Add-on Types.
- You will get the list of toolbars, you can select the toolbar which you wish to disable.
- Click on Disable.
Disabling toolbars will not remove some of the toolbars so follow these steps to remove the toolbars permanently-
- Press Windows key and R key together, a Run window will appear.
- Type appwiz.cpl, it will take you to the list of applications installed on the system.
- Search and do a right-click on the unwanted toolbar setup, it will give the option to uninstall.
- Click on Uninstall.
3. Reset IE
Malicious content like spyware and redirectors often change the default settings of your Internet Explorer. To boost the performance, you need to restore your browser to default. Follow these steps:
- Open Internet Explorer, Click on Tools (Gear icon) on the top right-hand corner.
- Navigate to Internet options or you can also type inetcpl.cpl in Run window to reach there.
- Click on Advanced Tab.
- Navigate to Reset. Click on Reset and set Internet Explorer settings to default.
- Click on Apply and this change will effect after a restart so make sure, you restart the system before you use IE.
4. Tighten The Security
Never save your credentials on your browser as you may get victimized by hackers or cybercriminals. You also need to turn on the Pop-up Blocker to avoid getting unwanted pop-ups and malicious content.
Follow these steps to ensure the safety.
- Open Internet Explorer, Click on Tools (Gear icon) on the top right-hand corner.
- Navigate to Internet options or you can also type inetcpl.cpl in Run window to reach there.
- Click on Content.
- Under AutoComplete->Settings, uncheck User names and password on forms.
To turn on the Pop-up Blocker –
- Open Internet Explorer, Click on Tools (Gear icon) on the top right-hand corner.
- Navigate to Internet options or you can also type inetcpl.cpl in Run window to reach there.
- Select Privacy tab, then Settings->Advanced ->Pop-up Blocker. Select the Pop-up Blocker.

5. Clean up The Hard Drive –
IE still running slow, do you feel the system is also running slow? If yes, then try removing the temp files and deleting old Windows updates files. This step will not only boost the performance of your IE but also all the other programs running on the system. Follow the steps –
- Press Windows key and R together, a Run window will appear.
- Type cleanmgr, Disk Cleanup window will open.
- Check on all the options and click on Delete.
- It will scan all the unwanted files and delete them, hence will improve the speed of the system and applications.
6. Check for Malware
If still, IE’s performance is not satisfactory, you need to check system for malware and viruses as they can hamper the performance of your system resulting in slow apps. Removing unwanted applications can also help you get the better performance. You need to install anti-malware to protect the system and boost the performance of the system.
