Google Authenticator App Finally Gets Updated from version 5.0 to 5.10

Multifactor Google authenticator finally gets a much-needed update after 2017.

As privacy concerns continue to rise amid the pandemic, two-factor authentication apps like Google Authenticator are much required. This excellent app strengthens your online security and makes it difficult for attackers to log in to your accounts.

Ironically, most websites as security measures send codes via SMS texting which is not secure because hackers can trick wireless carriers into switching the SIM card. Hence, to stay secure from such attacks Google Authenticator is the right solution.

It is an app that allows users to add an extra layer of security during login. To use it, one needs to connect an account with Google Authenticator and use the code received to log in. This code changes after a given amount of time.

• Using the updated version, without setting up Google Authenticator again on new device users can transfer their accounts between devices

What Does Google Authenticator Update Offer?

• Redesigning for newer screens with 16:9 aspect ratios
• Adjustable dark mode for users with and without OLED screens to match other apps
• Revamped user interface in accordance with Google’s Material Theme.
• FAB in the bottom right corner is refreshed and replaced by Google’s colorful plus sign
• New Transfer accounts option in the overflow menu
• Users cannot take screenshots in Authenticator due to security reasons

What Is The New Account Exportation Feature?

Earlier, when users changed phones, they had to manually re-setup all 2FA accounts. But with the new account exportation feature added to Google Authenticator users can now export and import already set-up accounts. The only thing they’ll need to do is verify their identity via fingerprint, face unlock, or pin. Once verified, a QR code will be generated on the new device to complete data transfer.

Is This New Feature Perfect?

As time will pass, like all Google updates this too will be made perfect. This means it is still better than what we are already using but is not perfect. The inability to move from device to device has been Google Authenticator’s biggest weakness. With this update, it will be somewhat handled but this cannot hide Google’s incompetency. The app and its functioning are way behind than its competitor. Where Authy offers cloud sync, Google Authenticator is offering a manual way to export-import data which is sad.

For me being a Google Authenticator user, this update comes as a relief but I expected more from Google. Already Google took these many years to release an update that isn’t perfect, sad.
