What Is Reserved Storage & How To Enable/Disable It?

Windows 10 brought a lot of new features. One of the useful features is Reserved Storage. Reserved Storage is a feature which puts a certain part of your available storage aside to be used as temporary storage to eliminate problems faced while installing updates.

The feature will reserve approximately 7 GB of storage for updates, system cache, temp files and apps. So, whenever a new update comes, Windows will delete files located in the reserved storage automatically to make space to install the update.

Steps To Enable Reserved Storage On Windows

To enable Reserved Storage on your existing installation of Windows 10, follow the below steps:

Step 1: Go to the Start menu.

Step 2: Type regedit in the search box. From the results right-click Registry Editor and select Run as Administrator.

Step 3: On Registry Editor window, navigate to this path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Microsoft->Windows->CurrentVersion->ReserveManager

Step 4: Locate ShippedWithReserves key from the right side of the panel and double click on it. Change its value 0 to 1.

Step 5: Click OK.

Once done, restart your computer and now the next time when Windows 10 will install updates, Reserved Storage will keep a set of hard drive space for updates.

Steps To Disable Reserved Storage On Windows 10

Step 1: Go to the Start menu.

Step 2: Type regedit in the search box. From the results right-click Registry Editor and select Run as Administrator.

Step 3: On Registry Editor window, navigate to this path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Microsoft->Windows->CurrentVersion->ReserveManager

Step 4: Locate ShippedWithReserves key from the right side of panel and double click on it. Change its value 1 to 0.

Step 5: Click OK.

Once done, restart your computer to let the changes take effect. Now until the next upgrade, Reserved Storage will not be disabled.

Steps To Check Reserved Storage Usage On Windows 10

Step 1: Press Windows and I to get Settings

Step 2: Go to System-> Storage.

Step 3: Click Show more categories.

Step 4: Now click System & reserved item.

Step 5: Under the Reserved Storage section, you can view the storage space reserved for updates.

Steps To Reduce Reserved Storage space on Windows 10

In case Reserved Storage is taking a lot of space on your computer, you can reduce the requirements on Windows 10. Follow the below steps:

Step 1: Press Windows and I to get Settings.

Step 2: Locate & click Apps.

Step 3: Navigate to Apps & Features from the left side of the panel.

Step 4: On Apps & Features, click Optional features.

Step 5: Choose the feature you want to remove, click uninstall.

You can also choose other additional optional features that you want to remove and click Uninstall.

Steps To Uninstall Language Packages:

To uninstall language packages which are not put to use, follow these steps:

Step 1: Press Windows and I to launch Settings.

Step 2: Locate Time & Language.

Step 3: Go to Language from left side of the panel.

Step 4: Navigate “Preferred languages”, select a language which is not needed, click Remove button.
