Did you know that there is something more dangerous that the Coronavirus Pandemic and is spreading rapidly among people? That, my dear friends, is the rumors about the virus itself.
After the outbreak, the social media platforms have been flooded with videos, posts, tweets and more, reporting about the virus breakout, how it is spread and measures to prevent it. It is good to observe that people across the globe are fulfilling their moral and social duty of informing others via posting self-created posts and videos.
However, not all information is accurate, and there are a few who are trying to take advantage of this situation and spreading false rumors and trying to creating panic among people. The reason for such misleading and falsifying acts during this global crisis is not known.
It seems that the social media platforms have begun to realize the harm that can be done via spreading of false rumors and have started taking steps against those guilty. As first reported by Reuters, Instagram has stated that it has begun removing Coronavirus related content and accounts from recommendation and its Explore option, unless the post is verified belonging to a credible health organization. It has also started to reduce the ranking of the content that has been rated false by certain third-party fact-checkers. Instagram notified its users that a check would be made on all the posts in the feed and stories section.
Instagram’s parent organization, Facebook, has already contributed its share in fighting the Coronavirus Pandemic by providing free advertisement spaces to the World Health Organization. This will ensure the WHO will reach out of the billions of Facebook users informing them about the latest updates of the virus and how to prevent the spread of infection.
The similar strategy has also been adopted by Twitter last week when it barred its users from posting any unconfirmed or misleading information, and all those tweets that contain fake treatments plans and any such information whose source could not be established.
This is one major step taken by Instagram and other social media platforms to monitor their content as it has been observed that these social media apps have gained the trust of humanity and can influence him/her more than anything else. I think it would be difficult to monitor all the content and practically impossible to eliminate every bit of rumor from Instagram, but at least the most popular accounts which can create a significant percentage of impact must be monitored.
