“Finding a job is like dating. Each person has a unique set of preferences and it only takes one person to fill this job”, says Nick Zakrasek, Google’s product manager for ‘Google For Jobs’ project. Yesterday, Google launched a new job search feature – Google For Jobs – on its search result pages that lets you search for jobs across various major job portals like Monster, LinkedIn, CareerBuilder and Facebook.
This job search engine is going to give job seekers an easier way to look at the available jobs without having to visit multiple websites – which are full of duplicate postings and irrelevant jobs. You’ll be able to see the job posts available right on the search page of Google.
This new feature is currently available in English on mobile and desktop. You just have to type in a query as “jobs near me” or something relevant to jobs and the search result page will show you the new job search widget that lets you see a great range of jobs. From there, you can further refine your query to only include full-time positions. If you click on more information, Glassdoor and Indeed ratings will show the ratings of the company.
Google allows you to filter your job search by location, industry and employer when they are posted. If you find something that suits you, you can turn on the notifications so that you get immediate alerts when a new job is posted that matches your personalized query.
Generating this comprehensive list isn’t an easy task. Google has to dedupe (a specialized data compression technique for eliminating duplicate copies of repeating data) all the duplicate listings posted by the employers on the job site. Then, its machine learning-trained algorithms sift through these results followed by categorization. These job sites already use some job-related markup to help search engines understand that something is a job posting.
Google isn’t playing any role once you find a suitable job on its service. It also cleared the fact that Google doesn’t want to directly compete with Monster, CareerBuilder and similar sites. It currently has no plans to let employers post jobs directly to Google For Jobs.
Overall, Google has taken a step ahead to reform the process of the job search and application. It’s going to do what it does best – Search. Undoubtedly, with this new jobs search engine, Google is going to change the competitive landscapes for the job sites.
