Google maintains an internal Area 120 which is the hub where all the innovative and mind-boggling ideas are born. The latest development from this hub is Stacks which is a PDF Scanner and Document Organizer at the same time which is developed on the Android platform. Scanning documents and converting them to a PDF can be accomplished by thousands of apps on Google Play Store but an AI-based document organizer is only available in Stacks.
The scan tool in Stacks is different from the scan tool in Google Drive and it features a camera with the ability to crop the image while capturing. Once you click the documents, the Stack app initiates naming the images and sort them into various categories. These categories are referred to as Stacks and hence the name of the app. These Stacks appear on the Home tab of the application and some of the popular categories include Banking, Bills, and Receipts etc.
The Google Cloud’s Document AI (DocAI) Platform starts working when the document image is uploaded and when the user views the image after scan it will display certain important information with copy options. For example, if you view a scanned bill, then you would get the total amount and transaction date highlighted on your mobile screen.
The Optical Character Recognition or OCR also helps to sort the documents and bills based on the organization like McDonald’s, Burger King etc. As this app consists of sensitive information, Google has inculcated security features like fingerprint or face unlock that would appear every time you launch the Stacks app.
The Stack App is currently available for users in the United States for free and in-app purchases allowing the users to add multiple pages into one PDF. Although Microsoft had initially developed the Office Lens a few years back but inculcating AI and classifying documents is Google’s own unique initiative. The scanned documents will automatically be synced to the user’s Google Drive and can be accessed from anywhere.
To sum up, Stacks by Google will help scan documents and sort them into different groups. It will highlight important details in a scanned document and allow the user to copy and paste that information anywhere else within the device. And, finally, this feature will help find documents faster and effectively on your phone.
