How To Reset Windows 10 Local Admin Password Without Disk or USB

Forgetting your computer’s login password happens to the best of us. In this busy life, we tend to forget a lot of things and password to our PC is one of them. You must be thinking now you need a USB software or reset disk to unlock your computer. Well, you don’t need any of it!

You can reset local Admin password for Windows 10 even without a USB or disk.

In this post, we have listed a couple of ways to reset local administrator password on Windows 10.

Methods to Reset Windows 10 Local Admin Password:

  • Use Local Admin account to reset Windows 10 password
  • Safe Mode To Reset Local Administrator Password Windows 10 password

Method 1:  Use Local Admin Account to Reset Windows 10 Password

This method will work if you can access alternative sign-in options such as administrator account or PIN or picture password. If you have any of these two, then follow the steps:

Step 1: On the lock screen of your Windows 10, under the password box, locate Sign-in Options.

Step 2: Click the alternative “Sign-in Options” and select “PIN” or Picture password, whichever you have set.

Step 3: If not, then login to optional administrator account to login (if you have). Enter the password for it and log in.

Step 4: Once you get access to your Windows computer. You can change the forgotten password for the local admin account by using various methods, say using Command Prompt, or Computer Management. Let’s discuss both of them.

Use Command Prompt to Reset Local Admin Password on Windows 10

Step 1:  Press Windows and R together to get Run Window. Type CMD and Command Prompt with admin rights will open as you have logged in via Admin account

Step 2: Once, the Command Prompt window comes up, to change user password for Windows 10, type “net user username new-password.”.

Note: Enter the username instead of “username” for which you want to change the password. Enter the desired password instead of  “new-password”

Let’s say net user Test Password123

Step 3: Your password for user account “Test” will be “Password123”

Step 4: Press enter to execute the command.

Now you can log in to Windows 10 PC with the user account and new set password.

Use Computer Management to Reset Local Admin Password On Windows 10

Step 1: Go to search box beside Start button and type Computer Management and press Enter to open launch Computer Management.

Note: You can also press Windows and R key to get the Run box and type compmgnt.msc and press Enter.

Step 2: In Computer Management window, locate Local Users and Groups from the left-hand side panel. Click on the arrow beside it to expand and then select Users.

Step 3: Now on the right-hand side, you will see a list of users present on Windows 10.

Step 4: Go to the user for which you want to change the password.

Step 5: Right-click on the user and select Set Password.

Step 6: A window with Set Password For “Username” will come up. Read the message and then click Proceed, if you find it ok, otherwise click Cancel to abort.

Step 7: Once you click to Proceed, you will get a new window. Enter a new password in New Password and Confirm Password and click Ok to get it done.

Method 2: Reset Local Administrator Password in Safe Mode on Windows 10:

If you don’t have an accessible admin account to log in your Windows 10, you can restart your computer in Safe Mode to reset local administrator password using command prompt on Windows 10. To do that, follow these steps:

Step 1: Click on Power icon on the locked screen and choose Restart and hold Shift key until you get a blue screen with options.

Step 3: Go To Advanced Options then select Startup Settings.

Step 4:  Under Startup Settings, select Enable Safe Mode.

Step 5: Click on Restart and press  either of the keys (F4/F5/F6) to Enable Safe Mode. You will get into Windows 10 Safe Mode with default administrator.

Note: You can now reset the password by using Computer Management tool or Command Prompt. We have used Command Prompt to reset the local admin password.

Step 6: Press Windows and R together to get Run Window. Type CMD to open a Command Prompt.

Step 7: Once, the Command Prompt window comes up, to change user password for Windows 10, type “net user username new-password.”

Note: Enter the username instead of “username” for which you want to change the password. Enter the desired password instead of  “new-password”

For example :  net user Test Password123

Step 8: Your password for user account “Test” will be “Password123”

Step 9: Press enter to execute the command.

Now you can log in to Windows 10 PC with the user account and new set password.

So, these are a couple of ways with which you can reset Windows 10 local administrator password without using USB or Disk.
