10 Classic Games We’d Love to Revisit on Nintendo Switch

It might surely seem that our love for Nintendo doesn’t really end. But things have shaped up in a really exciting way ever since Nintendo Switch was revealed last year. Recently, creators shed some more light on the highly ambitious console and announced the Switch to be priced at $299 in the US market. But apart from this, there was another interesting news about the console being backwards compatible. Which means that it will be able to play the entire Nintendo collection including titles from NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii and Wii U. Some breathtakingly good looking games have already been announced along with the console, including brand new Mario and Zelda games. But there’s a whole list of old and classic games we’d love to play with the Switch. So let’s take a look at some games that would be fun to reply.

• Resident Evil 4

While most people know about this game from the popular PlayStation 2 port, but GameCube was where the real deal was. During its release Resident Evil 4 became one of the biggest hits of that era. But not many know that it was first released for Nintendo GameCube in 2005. Not only this was the definitive version with the best graphics, but also helped define the future of horror games for next gen consoles. GameCube version also featured real-time cut scenes as compared to PS2 port and still looks great.

• Super Mario 64

Nintendo’s poster boy Mario has certainly reached iconic status in popular culture with an extended lore through various games, movies, comics and spin-offs. While the side scrolling platformer from the 8-bit era is loved by everyone, it was Super Mario 64 that expanded the world’s possibilities with modern gaming. Not only this was one of the first 3^rd platformers, but is also considered to be the best Mario game till date. N64 might not be as remembered as its predecessors, but it was definitely ahead of time as evidenced by Super Mario 64.

• Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

Sure most people might argue that Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation 1 was the definitive game including creator Hideo Kojima. But that clearly doesn’t stop its GameCube port from kicking ass in its own league. Released in March 2004, MGS: Twin Snakes is a remake of the original PS1 title with gameplay and graphical improvements as seen with Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. This also included several additions such as a new move-set, 1^st person aiming, remastered cut scenes and better enemy AI. While the original has more of a classical value, Twin Snakes holds up as the definitive version for modern day gamers.

• Golden Eye 007

N64 was certainly not a pushover when people compare it to the more advanced PlayStation One. Despite of the latter’s CD based media and graphical superiority, Golden Eye 007 released in 1997 was best played on the N64. The game is played in a 1^st person perspective and follows the same story as GoldenEye movie. The superb level design, fluid and challenging gameplay along with a multiplayer mode, made this game one of the best 1^st person shooting games to be released on home console.

• Mario Kart 64

The original Mario Kart game was sure primitive according to today’s standards. But things certainly changed for the best when it was released for N64. Mario Kart 64 uses 3d models and environments with a total of 8 playable characters. It also offered various playing modes such as Grand Prix, Battle Mode, Time Trial and Versus that ensures several hours of fun whether you’re with or without your friends.

• Contra 3: The Alien Wars

This one can truly be considered a classic as it still holds up as the best Contra game in the series (with the exception of Contra: Hard Corps for Sega Genesis). Contra 3: The Alien Wars although following the same style of side-scrolling run-n-gun action as the previous titles, innovates in ways only a few games could that time. It not only looks far more detailed and fluid than the NES games, but is also considered to be extremely challenging. The player can now choose two powerups that can be toggled using the shoulder buttons, with some amazingly detailed level and boss designs. The on screen enemies have also increased with extremely responsive controls making this the best shooter for SNES.

• Resident Evil: Remake

We’ve talked about how Resident Evil 2 and 3 were far better in terms of visuals and gameplay as compared to the original Resident Evil. That’s why Capcom decided to give the game a full next-gen overhaul with Resident Evil: Remake for the GameCube. The result was perhaps one of the best looking Resident Evil games to have ever surfaced. The remake was not just a graphically enhanced version but also made some major changes to the gameplay from the original. Players are now able to avoid being bitten by zombies by using knives, stun-guns and grenades. Some new areas and puzzles have also been added, including a new sub-boss making this a must-play title for fans of the series.

• Donkey Kong Country Returns

Platformers have always been Nintendo’s forte and it is best exemplified with Donkey Kong Country games. Probably the best in the series could be considered as Donkey Kong Country Returns from the N64. Not only the game managed to maintain its retro styled visuals, but added more fluid controls and a far more challenging gameplay. The game also received critical acclaim upon its release and is counted among the best platformers till date.

• Super Castlevania IV

Castlevania games, despite of their huge popularity were hated for several reasons. Irresponsive controls and unpredictable enemy spawns being one. But all these complaints were laid to rest by developers when they released Super Castlevania IV for the Super Nintendo. The game not only sounds better, but is by far the best hack n slash esque platformers, even by today’s standards. Fluid and responsive controls, detailed level design, heart racing background scores and intense boss battles are just few of the things this game offered apart from being the best game in the series.

• Metroid Prime

Do not be confused because we’ve placed this game on the last spot. Metroid Prime is by no chance a game that you can ignore. The game marked the series’ return after nearly being defunct for 8 years and was released for Nintendo GameCube in 2002. Compared to the original titles, Metroid Prime featured a 1^st person camera view instead of a side-scrolling platformer. The Morph Ball form used a 3^rd person view making this drastically different than its predecessors. Metroid Prime sold more than 250,000 copies during the first week of its release and is considered as the highest ranking games of all time.
