Ways To Block Applications In Windows 10

How to Block/Unblock Apps Using the Windows Defender Firewall?

One of the simplest ways is to add an app to block/unblock apps list using the Windows Defender Firewall. It is an inherent feature which is available on every Windows computer.

Step 1: Go to Start button, then open “Control Panel”.

Step 2: Select “System and Security”.

Step 3: Choose “Windows Defender Firewall”.

Note: You can access Windows Defender Firewall directly just by typing firewall in the search bar next to start button.

Step 4: Now, from left pane, you need to select “Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall”.

Step 5: You need to uncheck all the apps that you don’t want to access your network resources. Please keep in mind, you need to checkmark the app that you would like to allow.

Step 6: If you’re interested you can also check-mark the “Private” or “Public” checkboxes to permit and avert the app on private or public networks.

Note: In case, the name of the app is not mentioned in the given list then you can select “Allow another app” to add the names. You can select the app and click on Add. You can use the browse to navigate the apps.

How to Create A Block List In The Registry?

If you’re using the registry editor to block your apps then first and foremost thing is to create a block list in the registry. Later on, you can add the name of the apps to add more apps and programs to block applications in Windows 10.

As registry of your computer, contains essential function so it is important to perform all the steps very carefully. However, before moving forward do not forget to back up your registry, by creating a restore point.

Step 1:  Firstly, you need to sign up into your Windows account and access Run box.

Note: Press Win + R to access Run box directly.

Step 2: Type down “regedit” in the Run and click on OK.

Step 3: Choose “Yes” to open Registry Editor.

Step 4: Now, you to navigate “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies” in the registry editor.

Step 5: In the left pane of the Registry editor, look for Policies and right-click on it.

Step 6: Choose “New -> Key,” and name Explorer to the new key.

Step 7:  Now, click on your recently formed Explorer folder, now you need to right click in the empty space. Choose New and select DWORD (32-bit) value.

Step 8: You need to open “DisallowRun” and double-click on it to modify the value data to 1.

Step 9: Now, you need to right-click on the Explorer folder which you have created in the pane. Choose “New -> Value” and access DisallowRun.

Step 10: That’s it, you have successfully formed a block list.

Note: It is a process to add a key to DisallowRun Folder.

How to Include Applications into The Block List?

To include the apps into block list, you need to add the app to the DisallowRun box. Follow the below-mentioned steps to do the same.

Step 1: Firstly, right-click on the empty space in the pane and then choose New -> String Value and select the value 1.

Step 2: Now you need to double click on the recently created string. Open the value data box and enter the name of the app that you want to add to block list.

For instance, we’ll block Steam as it is one of the apps that keep you distracting from your work. After creating your key, you can restart your computer to save the changes.

That’s it. You now have your own block list in the registry editor, allowing you to control exactly which applications can be accessed on given accounts.
