Best Sci-Fi Movies You Cannot Afford To Miss in 2023

2021 was a fantastic year for Sci-Fi movie lovers as several mind-boggling gems such as Avengers: Infinity War, The Predator, Aquaman and Maze Runner: The Death Cure etc. were released. Moreover, sci-fi is one of the most profitable movie genre in the past decade with the explosion of superhero movies. Of course, what cinema lover wouldn’t wanna see a superpowered hero, kick villain booty in style?

Likewise, cinema has also become progressively better with time, and we can definitely hope for the best of sci-fi movies in 2019. So, without further ado let’s take a look at some of the most anticipated sci-fi flicks this year.

1. Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Infinity War not only left the titular superhero team in shambles, but also devastated audiences at a global scale as they had more questions than answers by the end. Thanos’ snap with the Infinity Gauntlet left the Avengers with only a handful of allies as it turned half of life in all universe to dust. Therefore it is okay to get totally pumped up for the sequel Avengers: Endgame, to wrap things up and provide the happy ending MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) has been setting up fans with, since Iron Man. Avengers: Endgame is expected to be released in April, 2019 and is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo with an ensemble cast of actors, returning from the previous movies.

2. Dark Phoenix

We’ve all seen the previous attempt at conceptualizing the Dark Phoenix saga from X-Men, and it was nothing less than a disaster. But the Fox Studios owned, X-Men franchise has certainly shown a lot of promise ever since their soft reboot, X-Men: First Class. Although the last movie, X-Men: Apocalypse received mixed reactions, there is still a lot of anticipation for the next film, entitled X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Evan Peters, Jennifer Lawrence and Sophie Turner, the story picks off exactly after Apocalypse as Jean Grey (Turner) will have to deal with her consciousness being overwhelmed by the Phoenix force.

3. Shazam!

No we’re not talking about a movie of a smartphone app that recognizes songs. Shazam is the next in line of DCEU superhero movies that could very well become the best sci-fi movie of 2019. It is a story about a boy in his teens, who transforms into the superhero Shazam via magic. Unlike the previous DCEU movies, Shazam takes things a little light heartedly and will have a lot of comedic elements, thanks to the hero’s portrayal by comedy actor Zachary Levi. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson also co-stars in this film as the villain Black Adam, and Djimon Honsou as the titular wizard. Shazam is set for its theatrical release in April 2019 and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

4. Star Wars: Episode IX

Although the Star Wars franchise may not enjoy its former glory, thanks to the totally unneeded and boring prequel trilogy of the original. Nevertheless, the new movies have certainly sparked new life making Star Wars: Episode XI a highly anticipated sci-fi movie. Episode IX will hopefully see a fitting end to the Star Wars saga leaving the far away galaxy in peace. The story will pick up directly after the events of The Last Jedi after the death of Luke Skywalker. It stars an ensemble cast including, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Daisy Ridley, John Boyga and Mark Hamill, set for release in December 2019.

5. Spiderman: Far from Home

Another MCU movie, Far From Home is the second film in the rebooted Spiderman franchise. The story will take place after the aforementioned Avengers: Endgame, as Tom Holland returns in his role as Peter Parker, after being turned to dust by Thanos. Therefore, we can safely assume (Spoiler Alert!) that everything affected by the Infinity Gauntlet will be back to normal after Endgame. Spiderman: Far From Home stars a popular cast of MCU actors, Samuel L. Jackson, Jon Favreau, Marisa Tomei, Cobie Smulders and Michael Keaton, with Mysterio set to be played by actor Jake Gyllenhaal. The movie is dated for release in July and could be among the best sci-fi movies in 2019.

6. Captain Marvel

If you thought MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) didn’t have enough in the past few years with their swarm of superhero movies, then 2019 will feel like a tsunami. Captain Marvel could be billed as the most anticipated of all upcoming sci-fi movies in 2019. It sheds more light on Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson) as she turns into one of the most powerful Marvel Comics superheroes, Captain Marvel. It stars Samuel L. Jackson as a young Nick Fury alongside, Djimon Honsou, Jude Law, Lee Pace and Gemma Chan etc. The story is centred around the Kree-Skrull War and will tie into the events of the forthcoming Avengers: Endgame.

7. Godzilla: King of the Monsters

One cannot talk about popular sci-fi movies and not mention ‘Gojira’ or Godzilla. And no we’re not talking about the crappy 1998 Godzilla that was nothing more than a skyscraper sized T-Rex. We’re talking about the Mothra slaying, real king of monsters, Godzilla. King of the Monsters, story follows the Crypto-Zoological agency as the gargantuan Godzilla faces-off against, Rodan, Mothra and King Gidorah. Although this movie too is ‘Made in Hollywood’ it’s previous entry, was well received by both fans and critics. This movie is also set to tie into another sequel titled ‘Godzilla Vs Kong’, the mere sound of which might cause fans to achieve ‘nerd nirvana’. Godzilla: King of the Monsters is set for release in May 2019 and tells of the events after the previous movie Godzilla (2014).

8. Replicas

Finally, a sci-fi movie that’s not about fan service, but that still doesn’t mean it’s not exciting enough. Replicas has already made big waves during its debut screening at the 2018 Night Visions Film Festival and is set for theatrical release on 11th of January 2019. It stars Keanu Reeves who plays a grieving neuroscientist after the loss of his family in a car accident. Things take a wild turn as he defies government and the laws of physics, to bring back his dead family to life, in an intriguing sci-fi thriller. Could ‘Replicas’ become the John Wick of sci-fi cinema? Even if it doesn’t it could still very well be among the best of sci fi movies, in 2019.

The ones listed above are not only the most anticipated but could very well be the best sci-fi movies of 2019. Nevertheless, there’s always room for more surprise entries for any sci-fi movie fan. So let’s look forward to the oncoming blast of ‘nerdgasm’ with crossed fingers!
