Each time Microsoft releases updates, it puts more effort to deliver quality updates, yet several issues are left behind. The latest Windows 10 May 2020 (Windows 10 Version 2004) released last month for millions of users globally too had certain problems. Prominent amongst them was related to printer service.
Since then, the company is trying to investigate the issues and fix them immediately. In this regard, Microsoft released a patch to fix printer bugs detected in June 2020 Patch Tuesday that stopped print jobs on certain printers.
In addition to this, the company also plans to use machine learning to identify PCs using an older version of Windows 10 and push the latest Windows 10, version 2004.
Why is the latest update called out-of-band update?
A patch or fix released to resolve an unexpected, widespread bug before or after the standard update time is called out-of-band update.
In this case, as the update is released outside of Microsoft’s regular scheduled Patch Tuesday updates it is called out-of-band update.
What fixes does this update bring?
After installing the security update released as a part of the Patch Tuesday, Windows 10 admins reported issues with Ricoh, Panasonic, Canon, and Brother printers. To fix it, Microsoft has released Windows 10 2004 update.
This means admins will not have to roll back updates to fix printer issues; they can reinstall security updates and get the printer working.
Detailed information about the fix is given on Windows 10 Message center page.
Will the update be installed automatically?
No, the update will not be installed automatically via WSUS or Windows Update. To fix printer issues, affected users will have to install Windows 10 Update manually.
Also, the company suggests, users affected by the issue should only use this update as it is optional. You can get more information about it here: KB4567512, KB4567513.
With this update being downloaded and installed, Windows 10 users will be able to resolve printer issues that occurred as the print spooler service was forced to close when attempting to print. Printing to PDF was also affected by the bug.
Moreover, in the coming week’s updates for other affected versions will also be released. This will include:
- Latest Feature Release
- Windows 10, version 2004
- Version 1709
- Version 1607
- Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2015 and
- Windows 8.1.
Not only this, but Microsoft is also said to use machine learning to identify devices running older versions of Windows 10 to offer updates.
This means users using the 1809 version will now be offered the version 2004 update automatically. Indeed, this is excellent news. Now people using the older version without doing much will be made aware of the latest version.
