How To Find Wi-Fi Password of Any Network

The other day, my brother had to send an email urgently to his colleague. Since he was connecting to the Wi-Fi for the first time on his new smartphone, he asked what my Wi-Fi password was? I hadn’t had the need to use my password for quite some time and I had apparently forgotten it. But, then I researched and found a way to know what my Wi-FI password was. Trust me, the tricks we are going to discuss saved me from embarrassment and so it shall you too.

And, while I am a Windows user, I know my friends using Mac and Android might have to face the plight of forgetting Wi-Fi passwords. So, needn’t worry, in this post, we’ll discuss ways you will be able to retrieve Wi-Fi passwords.

How To Find Your Windows Wi-Fi Password

1. Via The Control Panel

1. In the Windows search box, type Control Panel and click on Open from the right-hand side

2. Click on the View by dropdown and select Category

3. Select Network and internet

4. Select Network and Sharing Center

Path for Windows Users

Settings (Windows + I key combination) > Network & Internet > Status > Network and Sharing Center

5. Click on your Wi-Fi name highlighted in blue color

6. Click on Wireless Properties

7. Next, click on the Security tab and further click on the Show Characters checkbox as shown in the screenshot below –

2. Via Your Windows Terminal or Command Prompt

The drawback of the above method is that you will be able to see the password of the Wi-Fi network that you are connected to now. But, what if you want to see the passwords of all the Wi-Fi networks you had ever been connected to? How will this be useful?  Consider a real-life scenario –

Let’s say you frequently visit a cafe’ for your regular dose of coffee and while you enjoy your Coffee, you even surf the web on your Windows laptop. However, you have a knack for forgetting the password for which you have the manager to talk to. One day the manager’s on leave and unluckily you have forgotten the Wi-Fi password. But, now that you have visited the cafe’ one too many times, the Wi-Fi password of this cafe’ might be there on your computer.

For this purpose, you can take the help of your Windows Command Prompt or Windows Terminal.

At the outset, we’d like to mention that to execute the steps below you need to use the admin Windows Terminal or administrative Command Prompt.

1. In the Windows search bar, type Windows Terminal  and click on Open from the right-hand side.

2. When the Windows Terminal or Command Prompt window opens, type

netsh wlan show profile

3. Now that you have all Wi-Fi networks, select the one whose password you want to see and take a note of it

4. Next type –

netsh wlan show profile (“enter the Wi-Fi network name here”) key=clear

5. Press Enter

The end result should look something like this and you will be able to see the password under Security settings  against the Key Content
