There are times when you don’t want emails or messages disturbing you while working or playing games on your Mac. That’s when you use Do Not Disturb mode on macOS. The DND mode silences all your notifications such as messages, email, phone call, app update notifications on your Mac to provide you uninterrupted experience. When this mode is turned on, the notifications are routed to Notification Center so that you can check them later. In this way, you can work uninterrupted and get all your notifications once you are free.
There are a few methods to enable Do Not Disturb mode on Mac, but wouldn’t it be easy to use a keyboard shortcut to enable uninterrupted mode in a jiffy?
Default Keyboard Shortcut for Do Not Disturb Mode
MacOS comes with a Do Not Disturb shortcut by default. To activate it, you need to press & hold the Option key and click on the Notification Center on upper-right corner of the screen.
Once enabled, the color of the notification icon will change, it will look as if it has been greyed out. As we will come out of DND mode, it will turn white again.
This is how you can turn on or turn off Do Not Disturb mode, however, it can be inconvenient at times as you need to use both keyboard key and trackpad of your MacBook or mouse on your Mac. Therefore, it can’t be called a keyboard shortcut in real sense. Don’t you want to customize a keyboard shortcut for the feature to make it easier?
Steps To Create Customized Keyboard Shortcut For Do Not Disturb
To create a keyboard shortcut for DND mode, you need to use System Preferences.
- Click the Apple icon and select System Preferences.
- On System Preferences window, click Keyboard.
- Click the Shortcuts tab.
- Navigate to Mission Control in the left pane and select “Turn Do Not Disturb On/Off.”
Note: You make sure the option for the shortcut is checked.
- Hit Enter/Return, now you can set a keyboard shortcut for DND mode of your liking, any key combination of your liking.
From now, press these keys shortcut together and they will appear on the screen. So, let’s say, I have used Command + Shift + D as a keyboard shortcut. If the character combination selected is already in use as another shortcut by macOS, you will get a prompt which will ask you to change it to avoid any conflict.
In this way, you can use this keyboard shortcut for turn on/ turn off Do Not Disturb mode in no time. Set a shortcut & enable DND mode and get an uninterrupted session while working.
